Wizard World LA Sunday Visit

Made an unannounced visit to the Boom! Studios booth at Wiz LA this past Sunday. Talked to Ed Brubaker, who I hadn't had a chance to talk to much in the last couple of years. I met Brubaker back in '94 when I was involved in putting indy comic's online. That seems to be another lifetime. Anyway, it was good to be able to congratulate Ed on his success with Captain America. (Ed being THE guy responsible for Cap's death.) It's always great when the hype matches the book. I thought Cap #25 was a great comic on it's own, regardless of the media hype.

Then I got to say hi to Bill Willingham too. Always great to see Bill and am so glad he is getting the recognition he deserves with Fables. I was a huge Elementals fan back in the day and met Bill at the same convention I met our colorist Martin Thomas at back in '86. Martin was actually sitting right next to Bill. It was a kick to show him the book. Here I am 21 years later with my own comic book colored by someone who I met the same time I met him. What a trip, eh? Oh, good ol' Houston and those Larry Taylor cons...whatever happened to Larry Taylor and Lori his wife? Anyone?

And, yes, I did make such pest of myself back when I was 13 to the point where Bill has never forgotten me. I can't say as much for the conversation he and I had after the Eisner Awards this past year. That is a longer story I just refuse to get into here.

Also bumped into Sean Murphy, who I hadn't seen since we met at Comic-Con in 2005. Sean's been working on some bad ass stuff that you can read about here. No goofy shot this time like last...

Anyway - pix of the show here:

Michael Alan Nelson and Ross Richie manning the Boom! Studios booth!

Ed Brubaker action shot signing books. (Sorry Ed, I'll try one day to actually take a good picture of you. I have this other shot of him, Essad and Ivan Brandon...never mind.)

Justin Robinson who edits the Amazing Joy Buzzards and of 3rd World Publishing fame with his wife Laurie in my favorite shot of the show. Love that wide angle lens folks.
